OSHA 30 Hour General Industry

The 30 Hour General Industry Outreach Training Program is intended to provide a variety of training to workers with safety responsbility.  Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control, and prevention.  Instructional time must be a minimum of 30 hours.  Topic requirements are as follows:

  1. Mandatory – 13 hours
    1. Introduction to OSHA (2 hours)
      1. OSHA has required training content for this module.
      2. Covers worker’s rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint. It includes helpful worker safety and health resources. It also provides samples of reports, material safety data sheets, and the OSHA Log of Work Related Injuries and Illnesses.
      3. Materials include an Instructor Guide, PowerPoint slides, student handouts, and participatory activities.
    2. Managing Safety and Health (2 hours). May include Injury and Illness Prevention Programs, job site inspections, accident prevention programs, management commitment and employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, accident 4 investigations, how to conduct safety meetings, and supervisory communication.
    3. Walking and Working Surfaces, Including Fall Protection (1 hour)
    4. Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plans, Fire Prevention Plans, and Fire Protection (2 hours)
    5. Electrical (2 hours)
    6. Personal Protective Equipment (1 hour)
    7. Material Handling (2 hours)
    8. Hazard Communication (1 hour)
  1. Elective – 10 hours. Must present at least 10 hours of training on the following topics. At least 5 of the following topics must be presented. The minimum length of any topic is one-half hour.
    1. Hazardous Materials (Flammable and Combustible Liquids, Spray Finishing, Compressed Gases, Dipping and Coating Operations)
    2. Permit Required Confined Spaces
    3. Lockout/Tagout
    4. Machine Guarding
    5. Welding, Cutting, and Brazing
    6. Introduction to Industrial Hygiene
    7. Bloodborne Pathogens
    8. Ergonomics
    9. Fall Protection
    10. Safety and Health Programs
    11. Powered Industrial Vehicles
